SO, WHAT'S THIS PLACE ABOUT?

Entering a gated courtyard, lush and tropical and full of soft lighting, you realize this is the storied Charleston you've read about. The restaurant is elegant and traditional, from the paintings to the glassware to the white tablecloths, and sitting down you get the feeling that this dinner how it's supposed to be done: a special spot for a special evening of elegant food and drink.

HOW WAS THE CROWD?

This is a dress up locale for the evening crowd, so it's formal and very connected to the courses, but still has the ease of Charleston charm. The dining room is generally calm, and tables keep to themselves.

WHAT'S ON THE MENU?

The Peninsula Grill has been a fine dining institution in the city for 21 years. Beef, and steak specifically, is the main attraction, with varying cuts, add-ons including foie gras and lobster tail, and eight sauces to accompany it. For dessert, there are plenty of options, but someone at the table must order the coconut cake. It's the most famous dessert in the city, and the favorite of many a celebrity who has visited and then mail-ordered a whole cake once they returned home.

AND DRINKS? WHAT SHOULD WE LOOK FOR THERE?

Although there are cocktails and beer available, the Peninsula Grill consistently wins a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, so it makes sense, with its 300-bottle collection, that wine reigns supreme here, especially since there is a champagne bar with caviar service. Despite that intimidation factor, wines by the glass range a reasonable $11 to $19 each.

HOW'S THE SERVICE?

The service is everything you'd expect from fine dining. They know they work at someplace special, that you're probably there to celebrate something special (or have that special coconut cake), and there's a lot of individual attention as a result.

AT THE END OF THE DAY, WHO DO YOU RECOMMEND SHOULD VISIT?

This is a pop-the-question, sign-the-contract, celebrate-the-nuptials, and blow out the big 4-0 birthday kind of place.
